CANE CORSO HISTORY IN SOUTH ITALY

At New Era we have made it our mission to preserve the authentic South Italian Cane Corso in its original form just like the farmers in that region have done for centuries. The Cane Corso has been called many names in Italy over the years including Mollosso Italiano, Cane Da Pressa, Corso, Il Cane and Italian Mastiff. The Cane Corso shares his genetic history with the Neapolitan Mastiff and at one time all history points to them being the same dog. We are talking about the early Neapolitan Mastiff (Mastino Neapolitano) here a large but functional animal drastically different to the gigantic wrinkled slobs we see today. Originally used as a guard and catch dog for holding down big game, just like the Cane Corso the working Neapolitan Mastiff descends from the old Roman Molossian dog. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that it is highly likely they were just different names for the same dog. This theory is backed up when we look closely at old pictures, paintings and descriptions by authors over the last few centuries. In the illustrations we see big strong, strapping dogs with long limbs, long muzzle and in alot of cases in hunting scenes chasing down big game. We don’t see huge heavy boned over wrinkled immobile Mastiffs in any illustration during that period, the dogs were all functional working dogs.

The dogs in the old illustrations all look exactly like our Cane Corso and the dogs we still see preserved in the South Italian countryside.

Our New Era programme is now world renowned because of our dedication to preserving and refining for our own family protection project the traditional Italian Mastiff in his original condition.

The Cane Corso’s roots can be traced back to ancient Italy, where its ancestors were used by the Romans as large, powerful dogs bred for war. The breed’s name itself, “Cane Corso,” comes from the Latin word cohors, meaning “guardian” or “protector,” reflecting its original purpose. While the exact origins of the Cane Corso remain somewhat unclear, it is believed that the breed is a descendant of the Roman Molossian dogs, which were large and strong enough to fight in battle and guard against predators.

In the medieval and post-Roman era, these dogs adapted to the needs of rural Italian families. They were utilized primarily as guard dogs for both farms and livestock, often working alongside shepherds in the rugged southern landscapes. The Cane Corso was also employed as a hunting companion, particularly for wild boar. Over time, the breed became a central figure in South Italian villages, known for its loyalty and unwavering protection of families and property.

By the early 20th century, however, the Cane Corso faced a decline in popularity, as agricultural practices modernized and machinery replaced many of the tasks the breed once performed. Despite this, dedicated enthusiasts kept the breed alive, and in the 1980s, efforts to revitalize the Cane Corso were successful, ensuring its survival and eventual spread beyond Italy’s borders.

The Cane Corso is a striking dog with a large, imposing physique that conveys both strength and agility. Males typically stand between 25-28 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 90-120 pounds, while females are slightly smaller. Their muscular frame is perfectly suited to their working history, built to endure demanding physical tasks like herding, guarding, and hunting.

The short, sleek coat comes in various colors, including black, gray, fawn, and brindle, often with distinctive markings. The Cane Corso’s face is wide and powerful, with a pronounced muzzle and expressive eyes that seem to observe everything around them. Their ears, which were historically cropped for protective and practical reasons, are now commonly left natural in many places, adding to their noble appearance.

What sets the Cane Corso apart from other breeds is not just its size, but its agility. Despite being large and heavy, these dogs are known for their speed and quick reflexes, which make them excellent protectors and formidable hunters.

CANE CORSO HOME AND ESTATE GUARDIANS

Our breeding programme was created to produce family guardians. Starting with a foundation bloodline from South Italy from a long lineage of guardian and farm utility dogs we began to combine dogs together with strong genetic dispositions to guard both master and territory and a great balance with all family particularly with our children. I can personally hand on heart say that after many years of working with dogs of all breeds I have never met a breed of dog that even comes close to the traditional Cane Corso when it comes to his devotion to the family, it is deeply routed into the genetic core of the breed and it has been an absolute pleasure to witness my children growing up amongst the dogs. That being said although they are gentle and trustworthy around their family the Cane Corso is still a very serious animal and if he perceives a threat to his family he will swiftly switch into a defensive mode.

The Cane Corso has a long-standing reputation as a fearless guardian. Dating back to ancient Rome, this breed was originally used as a war dog and a hunter of large game. Over time, its role evolved into that of a protector of farms, estates, livestock, and families.

In rural Italy the Cane Corso became known as the farmer’s right hand. It patrolled large properties, deterred intruders and kept predators at bay. Unlike some guard dogs that rely solely on intimidation the Corso was admired for its discernment—able to sense real threats and act only when necessary.

Fast forward to today, and not much has changed in the breed’s instincts.

Modern Cane Corsos continue to serve as loyal protectors of homes and estates. They are deeply bonded with their families, naturally territorial, and have a strong work ethic. What sets them apart is their balance alert and imposing, yet calm and affectionate with those they trust.
